The Home Energy Audit

The Home Energy Audit of a Certified Professional includes measuring and reporting on the current conditions of your home. A Miller Energy Solutions audit includes the following:

  • Health & Safety (carbon monoxide levels and moisture problems)
  • Air infiltration rates (air leaks)
  • Insulation levels and effectiveness
  • Hot water heating system
  • Heating system efficiency
  • Distribution system (ductwork), if applicable
  • Lighting
  • Refrigerator operating efficiency
  • Other health and safety issues noted will be reported to the client

How is the Energy Audit done?

The Certified Energy Auditor uses a number of different diagnostic tools and instruments during the Home Energy Audit. Some of the tools used are:

  • Carbon monoxide (CO) analyzer: An important health & safety tool
  • Calibrated blower door: Measures the air tightness of a home and helps in identifying areas where air leakage is occurring
  • Thermal imaging: Provides visual images of ineffective insulation and areas of heat loss
  • Electronic gas leak detector
  • Recording watt meter: Measures refrigerator efficiency
  • Bore scope inspection camera: A very small camera on a flexible probe to see inside walls & ceiling cavities

After the completion of the Energy Audit a comprehensive report is prepared showing the findings and recommendations of the Energy Audit.

Steps in the Energy Saving Process

1)  Schedule an Energy Audit

2)  Prepare for the Energy Audit

a.  Make a list of existing problems such as condensation or drafty rooms

b.  Have copies of or a summary of one year’s energy bills (gas & electric)

3)  Auditor Interview – The auditor will learn about the resident’s behavior such as: How many people live here? Is every room in use? What are typical thermostat settings?

4)   The Auditor will examine the outside of the house to determine size, construction type, window type and size, etc.

5)  Appliance testing - The Auditor will test the furnace, water heater and gas range for operating safety and efficiency

6)  Blower door test – A calibrated blower door will be used to test the home’s air tightness, determine ventilation rate and to find air leaks

7)  Review the report prepared by the Auditor

8)  Have Miller Energy Solutions prepare a budget proposal for weatherizing your home
